The cost of an electrical panel project cannot be determined responsibly from amperage or a photograph alone. Two homes requesting a 200-amp panel can require very different work once the service equipment, utility requirements, grounding, access, and existing wiring are inspected.
Start by Identifying the Actual Project
Homeowners often use the phrase “panel upgrade” for several different scopes:
- Panel replacement: Replacing the distribution panel while retaining the existing service capacity when permitted and appropriate.
- Service upgrade: Increasing electrical service capacity, which may also involve the meter equipment, service conductors, grounding, utility work, and inspections.
- Subpanel installation: Adding another distribution panel for new circuits when the existing service has sufficient calculated capacity.
These are different projects. A subpanel creates circuit space but does not increase the electrical service capacity.
The Existing Service Changes the Scope
The condition and configuration of the meter base, service mast or underground service, conductors, main disconnect, grounding and bonding, panel location, and utility connection can all affect the project.
A same-amperage panel replacement may still require utility coordination or additional service work. A service upgrade may not require every component to be replaced if existing equipment is approved and suitable. The inspection determines the scope.
Access and Routing Affect Labor
An accessible panel with clear working space is different from equipment located in a finished wall, crowded room, difficult exterior location, or area that no longer meets current requirements. Rerouting circuits or service conductors can add work even when the final panel rating is the same.

Damaged conductors, improper splices, corrosion, water entry, incompatible breakers, aluminum branch-circuit connections, double taps, or missing grounding components may need to be addressed as part of the project. Those conditions should be documented instead of hidden inside a vague allowance.
Planned Loads Matter
An EV charger, generator, hot tub, electric range, workshop, addition, or heating conversion can affect the load calculation and panel design. The least expensive panel option is not a good value if it cannot support the work the homeowner is planning.
Permits, Inspections, and Utility Work Vary

Comparing only the final number can be misleading when the scopes are different. Compare the equipment, permits, utility work, corrections, and exclusions listed in writing.
