Why Does My Breaker Keep Tripping?

A circuit breaker opens when it detects conditions outside its intended operating range. One trip may come from a temporary overload. A breaker that trips again is telling you the cause has not been resolved.
What to Do After the First Trip
If there is no smoke, burning odor, moisture, visible damage, buzzing, or sparking, turn off and unplug equipment on the affected circuit. Open only the normal hinged panel door. A clearly tripped breaker may be moved fully to OFF and then back to ON one time.
If it trips again, will not reset, or you cannot identify the affected circuit safely, leave it off and call an electrician. Do not remove the panel cover.
1. The Circuit Is Overloaded
An overload occurs when connected equipment draws more current than the circuit is intended to carry. Space heaters, hair dryers, countertop appliances, portable air conditioners, and similar equipment can use much of a circuit's capacity.
Clue: The breaker trips after several devices begin operating, but remains on when some of them are unplugged.
Next step: Reduce the load. If normal household use repeatedly overloads the circuit, an electrician can determine whether additional circuits or another repair is appropriate.
2. An Appliance or Wiring Fault Is Present
A damaged cord, appliance, receptacle, connection, or wire can create a short circuit or another high-current fault.
Clue: The breaker trips immediately, or it trips when one particular device is connected or switched on.
Next step: Stop using a suspected device. If the breaker trips with equipment unplugged, leave it off and arrange a wiring diagnosis. Do not keep testing a device that smells burned, sparks, or shows damage.
3. A GFCI Is Detecting Leakage Current
GFCI protection responds to current leaving its intended path, which is especially important around water. Moisture, a damaged appliance, damaged wiring, or a downstream fault can cause a trip.
Next step: Unplug connected equipment and reset the GFCI once if the area and device are dry and undamaged. If it trips again, stop. Never tape or hold a reset button in place.
4. An AFCI Is Detecting an Arc-Fault Condition
An AFCI trip can involve damaged wiring, a loose connection, a damaged cord or appliance, or a compatibility problem that requires diagnosis. The trip alone does not identify which cause is present.
Next step: Do not replace an AFCI with a standard breaker to make the tripping stop. Have the circuit and connected equipment evaluated.
5. The Breaker or Panel Connection Needs Attention
Breakers and panel connections can deteriorate, loosen, become damaged, or be mismatched to the panel. A breaker that will not remain on with the circuit unloaded requires professional diagnosis. Replacement equipment must be approved for the exact panel and circuit.
When the Condition Is an Emergency
Smoke, active sparking, fire, melted material, burning odor, or rapidly worsening electrical noise requires immediate action. Leave the area and call 911 for a fire or immediate threat. Do not touch damaged equipment or a panel that appears hot.
