A whole-home surge protective device can reduce the voltage that reaches connected equipment during certain transient events. It is an important layer of protection, but it does not make a home immune to lightning, outages, wiring faults, or every type of voltage problem.
What a Surge Protective Device Does
A panel-mounted surge protective device responds to a brief overvoltage event and limits the voltage passed into the electrical system. Depending on its design, it diverts or clamps surge energy so less of that energy reaches connected equipment.
The device must be correctly selected and connected to the home's electrical system. Grounding, bonding, panel compatibility, installation method, and conductor routing can affect performance.
Whole-Home and Point-of-Use Protection Work Together
A whole-home device provides protection near the service or distribution panel. A listed point-of-use surge protector adds another layer for the equipment connected to it.
A basic power strip is not necessarily a surge protector. Check the product label and listing. Point-of-use devices protect only connected equipment, while a panel-mounted device covers a broader portion of the home's electrical system.
Where Surges Can Come From
- Nearby lightning activity
- Utility switching or restoration events
- Damage to utility equipment or power lines
- Motors and equipment switching inside the home
- Electrical faults elsewhere on the system
Surge activity can damage equipment immediately or contribute to degradation over time.
What Surge Protection Does Not Do
- It does not provide backup power during an outage.
- It does not correct loose wiring, open neutrals, grounding defects, or sustained abnormal voltage.
- It does not replace breakers, GFCIs, AFCIs, smoke alarms, or proper wiring.
- It cannot guarantee protection from a direct lightning strike.
- It does not guarantee that every connected device will survive every surge.
What to Consider Before Installation
- The home's service voltage and panel configuration
- The SPD type, listing, ratings, and manufacturer requirements
- Panel and breaker compatibility
- Grounding and bonding condition
- Placement and conductor length
- Status indicators and the manufacturer's replacement guidance
- Point-of-use protection for sensitive electronics
Is It Worth Considering?
Homes now contain electronic controls in heating and cooling equipment, appliances, lighting, garage door openers, computers, entertainment equipment, and EV charging systems. A whole-home SPD can be a useful protective layer for those systems, particularly when combined with point-of-use protection and a properly maintained electrical system.
The decision should be based on the equipment in the home, the electrical system's condition, and the limitations of the selected device, not a promise that it “protects everything.”
